Durango & Silverton Railroad Excursions

Depending on the time of year, there are different train rides, excursions, and train cars to choose from:

Summer / Fall Durango & Silverton Train:

(May – October) For a historic step back in time, ride the coal-fired, steam-powered narrow-gauge train about 45.4 miles each way from Durango, CO to Silverton, CO. Trains depart Durango in the morning and depart Silverton in the afternoon for the return trip back to Durango. You can depart from either town, although departing from Durango is most popular.

Cascade Canyon Excursions

Although these train rides run on the same narrow-gauge railroad track as the Durango to Silverton full ride, these round-trip Cascade Canyon Excursions are shorter and do not go all the way to Silverton. You will enjoy incredible scenery of the steep mountain canyons, high mountain curves, and the pristine San Juan National Forest.

  • Summer Cascade Canyon Express: (June – August) Departing from the Rockwood Station (about 17 mi. north of Durango), this diesel-engine train (not a coal-fired engine) is perfect for young families or folks looking for an incredibly scenic, but shorter 2-hour train ride. Check schedule for available days (Monday through Wednesday, but also some Thursdays during peak season)
  • Winter/Spring Cascade Canyon Train: (November – May) Departing from the Durango Station, this coal-fired, 5-hour round-trip train ride takes you through the wintry San Juan Mountains. Enjoy a fire-side lunch and walk along the Animas River. Bring lunch or pre-order a boxed lunch.

There are many ways to ride the scenic, historic Durango & Silverton Railroad. Hopefully, this will help you narrow down the best excursion that is just right for you.

Round Trip Train Ride:

Ride the train to Silverton, CO, and back to Durango, CO, round trip. Each leg of the journey is 3.5 hours with about a 2-hour layover in Silverton for lunch, shopping and exploring the town (about 9 hours total).

Train / Bus Combo:

Shorten your day by riding the train to Silverton in the morning and return to Durango earlier in the afternoon by motor coach bus. There is an additional $20 fee per passenger for bus seats if riding standard or deluxe class of service on the train. First-class passengers do not pay fee for bus seats.

Bus / Train Combo:

Ride the motor coach bus to Silverton later in the morning and return to Durango by train in the afternoon. There is an additional $20 fee per passenger for bus seats if riding standard or deluxe class of service on the train. First-class passengers do not pay fee for bus seats.

One-Way Train Ride:

A discounted one-way fare is available for standard class train service (closed vintage coach or open-air gondola) for trains going from Silverton to Durango in the afternoon ONLY. One-way rides from Durango to Silverton cost the same as the round-trip fare.  No other form of the train’s transportation (bus / van service) may be used to qualify for the discounted one-way fare.

Silverton Silverlight Express:

Start your train ride in Silverton in the afternoon. Take a van shuttle service from Durango at 7PM and return to Silverton around 8:15PM.  Regular round trip train fares apply plus $30 per passenger van fee. Available May 20 – October 12.

Layover Train Rides:

You can ride the train one way, Durango to Silverton OR Silverton to Durango, and stay one or more nights in either town before taking your return train trip back to your original departing location. Speak with a travel consultant for more info and reservations, as layover packages cannot be booked online.

All Aboard Durango’s Polar Express™!

The Next Stop – The North Pole!

The Polar Express Movie Image

Inspired by the award-winning book by Chris Van Allsburg, and the run-away hit movie starring Tom Hanks, this classic holiday favorite comes to life as you and your family take a magical round-trip journey to the North Pole aboard the historic Durango and Silverton Train.

The Polar Express holiday train ride has become a holiday tradition for many families! It’s fun for the entire family and kids of all ages. All are encouraged to wear their pajamas to help bring the magic of the Polar Express™ story to life. “All Aboard” says the conductor, as your train ride to the North Pole begins. As the Polar Express leaves the depot, concessionaires, dressed in chefs’ coats and hats, will serve hot chocolate. The Polar Express story is read over the sound system and Santa’s helpers walk up and down the aisle with the book, turning the pages and showing everyone the pictures. The Polar Express Chef

The story finishes just as you arrive at the North Pole. The lights dim, and an announcement is made to start watching for Santa. The North Pole will be lit with Christmas lights, and Santa and his helpers will be there waving at the Polar Express™ train as it pulls in. Santa greets the children in each of the train cars. And, for “those who believe,” he has a special gift (just like in the story). On your return journey back to the Durango Station, Christmas Carol songbooks are passed out for all to join in on a festive singalong.

Train Car Classes of Service:

Standard Class–
An enclosed vintage coach will transport you to the North Pole in style. This car is configured like a bus with an aisle down the middle and bench-style, cushioned seats, facing forward towards the front of the train. Each seat fits two people, and each standard vintage coach can seat up 42 passengers. Passengers will receive hot chocolate, a treat from the “chefs” on the train, and the first gift of Christmas from Santa.

Deluxe Class–
The San Juan Deluxe Coach features comfortable seating. The backs of the seats can be flipped, which allows for groups of four to face one another to share in the merriment of the holiday season. Passengers receive a ceramic Polar Express souvenir mug. And, just like standard class each person will receive, hot chocolate, a treat, and the first gift of Christmas from Santa.

First Class –
These vintage train cars feature comfortable table and chair style seating with plenty of leg room and accommodate up to 24 passengers. Choose from the Prospector, Alamosa or Yankee Girl, which are remodeled historic cars from the 1800’s and decorated for Christmas. First-class passengers will receive a special souvenir, a ceramic Polar Express mug, hot chocolate, a treat, and the first gift of Christmas from Santa.
