Stay one or more nights at your choice of select lodging options in Durango, Colorado. The next morning, take in the beautiful winter scenery as you ride the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to the Cascade Canyon. The train winds through the spectacular and breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of the two-million-acre San Juan National Forest, where you will relive history with the sights and sounds of yesteryear on this 1882 adventure. The coal-fired, steam locomotives are maintained in their original 1923-1925 vintage condition. In Durango, take time to enjoy the Railroad Museum, located in the rail yard roundhouse, featuring full-size locomotives, maps, photos, artwork, memorabilia, and authentic collectibles.
Day One – Arrive Durango and check into your hotel. (Choose from many select options ranging from budget-friendly motels to deluxe Victorian hotels, condos, and more). Explore historic Durango’s galleries, shops, great restaurants, and local entertainment.
Day Two – After breakfast, get ready to board the train at the Durango Train Depot for your 9:45am departure to the Cascade Canyon. (Please be in your seats 30 minutes prior to departure).
When the train arrives the Cascade Canyon, there is a 45-minute layover. You can get off the train to explore along the Animas River and enjoy lunch under the outdoor, covered pavilion with a fire pit. Bring your own lunch, pre-order a gourmet boxed lunch, or purchase light snack items and drinks on the train. (Dress in layers and outdoor winter clothing).
Board the train again for your return trip back to Durango, arriving in town at 2:45pm. Make time to explore the Durango Railroad Museum, which is included with your ticket.
